Key takeaways

  • Find your Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) on the plate in the driver's door frame.
  • Choose a rope with a minimum breaking strength of 2 to 3 times your GVW. A 3.2 tonne Land Cruiser needs at least 10 tonnes.
  • Freeing a vehicle from flat, soft sand takes about 25% of its GVW, plus a 20% margin.
  • Lighter vehicles should use a rope of at least 10 metres, which also gives more reach in mud and sabkha.

Strength: 2 to 3 times your Gross Vehicle Weight

Your Gross Vehicle Weight is your vehicle fully loaded with passengers and equipment. It is usually printed on the plate in the driver's door frame. Multiply it by two to three for the minimum breaking strength you need.

Ready reckoner. Pull needed is 25% of GVW plus a 20% margin; stretch is The Off Road Rope at that pull.

Length: 8 or 10 metres

The longer the rope, the longer the stretch. If you drive a lighter vehicle, choose at least 10 metres so you can recover heavier vehicles. If mud pits or sabkha are part of your terrain, the extra reach of 10 metres helps keep the recovery vehicle on firm ground. If space is tight, an 8 metre rope packs smaller.

Diameter

Thicker rope is stronger, heavier and bulkier. The Off Road Rope is 28 mm (1.1 inch) in diameter with a 14 tonne minimum breaking strength, and weighs 5.2 kg.

Questions

What strength kinetic rope do I need for a Land Cruiser?

A Toyota Land Cruiser at 3.2 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight should use a kinetic rope with a minimum breaking strength of at least 10 tonnes (2 to 3 times GVW). The Off Road Rope is rated to 14 tonnes.

What length of kinetic rope is best?

10 metres is the all-rounder: the minimum for lighter vehicles, and the better choice for mud and sabkha. Choose 8 metres if space is tight.
