A Kinetic Energy Recovery Rope is a critical part of an off-roader’s tool kit and having used dozens of different types, and never quite satisfied with the amount of stress many put on our vehicles, we decided to make our own – and that is how The Off Road Rope was born!

WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Kinetic Energy Recovery Ropes are specialized recovery tools designed to assist in recovering stuck vehicles by utilizing the principle of kinetic energy transfer.
These ropes are made of high-strength nylon designed to stretch under tension. When a pulling force is applied to the rope, it stretches and stores potential energy within its elongated fibers. This elasticity helps absorb and dissipate the forces generated during the recovery process, minimizing stress on the vehicles involved. As the recovery vehicle pulls on the kinetic rope, the kinetic energy from the momentum of the vehicle is transferred to the rope, and in turn transferred to the stuck vehicle as the rope recoils. The more elastic the rope at low loads, the smoother the transfer of kinetic energy, and the smoother the pull. These ropes provide:
- a safer recovery solution compared to straps or chains as they do away with sudden jolts or jerks that may cause damage to vehicles or injury to occupants.
- more versatility as it allows lighter vehicles to recover much heavier vehicles as their pulling force can be multiplied using momentum.
- An efficient recovery method as the release of stored energy creates a dynamic pulling force that is highly effective when recovering vehicles in deep mud or soft sand.
IT'S ALL IN THE STRETCH
Generally, when a vehicle is stuck in flat, soft sand, a force of about 25% of Gross Vehicle Weight is required for safe extraction. That’s 800 kgs for your standard Toyota Land Cruiser. Add 20% as a safety margin, and you’re looking at a force of 1 tonne. That’s all the force you need and most kinetic energy ropes or snatch straps will only stretch around 5-10% at that load. That is what makes The Off Road Rope superior – it stretches 20% at 1 tonne, and 25% at 2 tonnes.

A general rule of thumb is for your recovery equipment to be rated to two to three times your Gross Vehicle Weight – that’s your vehicle, fully loaded with passengers and equipment. This number is generally found in the frame of the driver door. So a Toyota LandCruiser, at 3.2 tonnes, will ideally require a rope with a minimum breaking strength of at least 10 tonnes. At 28 mm diameter, The Off Road Rope has a breaking strength At 14 tonnes* and has undergone UV treatment to withstand the harsh elements of the Middle East Environment. It’s why we offer a 5 year warranty.

How long should it be?
The length of your rope is important and should be determined on a number of factors.
- The longer the rope, the longer the stretch. If you have a lighter vehicle, you should consider a rope that is at least 10 metres in length to give you more options when needing to recover heavier vehicles.
- Are mud pits / sabkha’s part of your terrain? Then a longer rope will give you more options to ensure the recovery vehicle is on safe terrain for the pull.
- How much space do you have in your vehicle? The longer the rope, the more space it takes.
